Hi!

My name is Felipe, I’m a Game Designer and Developer from Brazil based in Washington, D.C. I have a master’s degree in Game Design from American University’s Game Lab. I also have work experience as an Instructional Designer and have learned HTML/CSS for front-end web development.

Check out some of the stuff I’ve worked on below, and feel free to contact me!

Instructional Design

As an Instructional Designer, I was able to leverage my game-related knowledge to increase interactivity, engagement and knowledge retention in several online courses aimed at medical professionals within the Veterans Health Administration. This was done with the Articulate Storyline software which I learned to use and took advantage of its interactive capabilities. I also designed and developed from the ground up an internal training initiative concerning cybersecurity and proper equipment usage.

The approach to online education was always grounded on evidence-based adult learning design processes to define and design individual learning items, programs and curricula on time, to budget, and to quality standards. Utilizing the ADDIE model and a solid understanding of industry standards such as the Mayer’s principles of multimedia learning, I designed robust interactive software coupled with educational game design tactics acquired in a Language Learning Video Games course from the master’s program.

Interactive Exercises

By implementing interactivity into a course, learners get significantly more engaged and it’s proven to help retain the information for much longer periods of time. In this example, learners use the mouse to move the slider on each prompt towards the answer they believe is correct. In this case they can go back and forth freely but in a testing scenario the answers would be locked in after confirming. Any approach that elevates the experience beyond a boring slideshow and still remains within the bounds of evidence-based instructional design is a plus!

Advanced Organizers

This game-inspired section header clearly lays out the trajectory of the educational course in a fun and creative manner. This is an example of always communicating to the learner exactly how far they are in their progress, with all that’s been learned and what to expect ahead.

Skill/Knowledge Checks

Allowing learners to check their own knowledge throughout a course helps solidify that information and smooth its transition from short-term to long-term memory. I designed highly interactive skill checks at several strategic points of each course to make sure learners stay on top of what they are understanding and what needs to be reviewed before a final assessment.

Game Projects

My favorite aspects of game development are Level Design and coming up with fun, creative gameplay mechanics. The games that have inspired me the most are the FromSoftware’s “Soulsborne” games, platformers like the Super Mario games, and RPG’s like The Elder Scrolls and The Witcher. However indie games made by small teams have a special place in my heart as they tend to display the most originality and beautiful art.

Museum in Your Living Room: Recreating the Peace Corps Experience in Mixed Reality

Academic paper published in IEEE GEM 2019 and presented at Yale University

We describe the design and implementation of a mixed reality exhibit prototype for the Museum of the Peace Corps Experience. The Museum exhibits are reconstructed using photogrammetry and made interactive using real-time physics simulation and freehand interaction. We recorded the volumetric captures of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers telling stories related to the artifacts. The prototype was evaluated in a pilot study with a positive response of the audience.

Diversidades Espirituales y Religiosas en Quito, Ecuador: Una Mirada desde la Etnografía Colaborativa

Book based on a large scale ethnographic research project and museum exhibition

“Spiritual and Religious Diversity in Quito, Ecuador: A Look From Collaborative Ethnography”

In association with my university and working alongside the City Museums Foundation in Quito, Ecuador, I researched through active fieldwork the main center and temple of Hinduism in the city, Govindas Cultural Center. This book is an ethnographic approach to the spiritual and religious diversity in Quito, Ecuador. Based on field study and the consequent museum exhibition.
